Footnotes:

  1. There is no mention of anyone keeping the Sabbath before the time of Moses.

  2. Hosea 2:11 speaks of “her” Sabbaths, referring to Israel.

  3. Sabbath keepers argue that the Sabbath was to last “forever.” However, similar language is used about feasts (Ex. 12:14), offerings (Ex. 29:42), incense (Ex. 30:8), and priesthood (Ex. 40:15). The idea is age-lasting.

  4. The first day of the week is profoundly significant for Christians. It was on the first day of the week that Christ was raised from the dead, the church of Christ was established, and Christians assembled to give of their means.

  5. Sabbath keeping included: (1) no work (Ex. 20:10), (2) no travel (Ex. 16:29), (3) no cooking (Ex. 16:23), and (4) burnt offerings (Num. 28:9-10). Furthermore, Sabbath breakers were to be executed (Num. 15:32-36).

  6. Ignatius, Irenaeus, Eusebius and other early writers taught that the Sabbath was abolished.
