The Golden Rule
Few passages are more recognizable than Matthew 7:12. It falls into the same category as Joshua 24:15 and John 3:16 in terms of familiarity. It is, of course, the golden rule. The golden rule says that we are to treat others the way we want to be treated. It is but another way of stating the command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39; Romans 13:9). Sadly, however, few people actually live by the golden rule. The one who lives by the golden rule will not determine his treatment of others by asking what they deserve, but by asking how he would want to be treated in the same situation. That means he will not speed up to keep a merging car from getting over, participate in the gossip sessions at work, or mistreat his neighbors at home. The golden rule is the key to unity in the local congregation (Philippians 2:3-4). It is also the key to successful marriages, world peace, and host of other things that mankind seems to struggle with. Indeed, where the golden rule lives, dissension dies. I
believe the members at South End are committed to following the golden rule. I
commend you for that, and urge you to keep it up! |
