Footnotes:
-
God ordained three
institutions: The home (Gen. 2:18-25), the church (Eph. 3:10-11), and civil
government (Rom. 13:1-7). The home is the oldest institution.
-
The home is a social unit consisting of family members. The first home had a
husband (Adam), wife (Eve), and children (Cain, Abel, Seth, etc).
-
The husband is the head of the
wife (1 Cor. 11:3). Hence, he is the leader of the home. The fact that an
elder must “rule” his house well (1 Tim. 3:4, KJV) also emphasizes the
husband’s role as leader.
-
From the beginning, man was to
work (Gen. 2:15). However, he must keep work in its proper place. Some men
have neglected their families by working too much.
-
Agape is a willed-love that
goes beyond emotion and seeks the very best for its object. Husbands are to
love their wives “as Christ loved the church” and “as their own bodies”
(Eph. 5:25, 28). Likewise, wives are to love their husbands (Tit. 2:4).
-
The wife’s primary
responsibility is domestic. She is to be busy at home (1 Tim. 5:14). There
is no greater job a woman can have than that of housewife!
-
The wife’s place is one of
submission (Eph. 5:22; Col. 3:18; 1 Tim. 2:11-12; Tit. 2:5; 1 Pet. 3:1-6).
She is to yield to the authority of her husband. This does not mean,
however, that the husband is to rule with an iron-fist. He is to honor his
wife as the weaker vessel (1 Pet. 3:7). Wives are a blessing from God (Prov.
18:22). Submission is not a sign of weakness, but strength.
-
Children are a blessing from
God (Ps. 127:3), and come with great responsibility. Parents are to raise
their children in a spiritual atmosphere filled with instruction and
teaching (Deut. 6:7). Many parents fail in this area.
-
Children are to obey their
parents (Col. 3:20). When children are disobedient, they should be punished.
Spanking is a God-ordained punishment (Prov. 13:24, 22:15; 23:13-14).
